Homesteaders

A few months ago, Steve's sister Shelley told me that she and James were considering moving out of the big city and buying a farm and sent me the link to the real estate site listing.  I was so excited for them!   I called Juls right away and we oohed and ahhed over all the photos.

I was so thrilled when all the pieces fell into place and they were able to buy it!  They are living a dream, an absolute dream.  James is from Australia so they named the farm after a place in Australia.

They now own many many acres, I have no idea how many but it is a lot--enough that James went hunting this year on his own property.

They cut down their Christmas tree from their own woods.

They have two, maybe three ponds.

There is a long path that leads to a clearing where they are talking about  building a large fire pit and clearings for tents.

One of their fields they use for making hay.

The farmhouse is one hundred, maybe one hundred thirty, years old.  Some of the rooms have the original wide plank floors.

The neighbor brought over a very old black and white photo of the house along with some stories, another neighbor brings them fresh eggs.

They drink their milk from a local dairy and it comes in glass bottles.  I mean really I did not even know you can still get milk this way anymore.

They are raising alpacas--James built the fence.  He probably chops his own wood for the fireplace too.

I told Shel that they are Laura and Almonzo--seriously.

The whole thing just feels so right, and like one big adventure.

Wow. That is so great. Beautiful photos. I love the alpacas. Does she spin or knit? I'm not convinced there is another reason for alpacas to exist other than for the wonderful, warm, soft, amazing fiber they create. (I'm a knitter, can you tell?)

A beautiful beautiful life. So glad for them, and you get to visit! The alpacas are so fun, and so is your husband, lol. Love all the portraits and cousins together. The last picture is my favorite, it captures the wonder of reading with a child. Your sister looks so tender and beautiful and the child's eyes, just looking.

What a great post...your pictures captured so many different views of their "new life."

I wanted to let you know that we have cousin near York, PA that has created a dairy business out of an old farm and bottles his milk in glass jars...it is called Apple Valley Creamery - and they have a website you can google.  you might want to take a day trip there sometime - you can get a tour of the bottling and processing, as well as shop in their little general store.

Oh, I am so drooling with envy all over my keyboard right now ... which is funny, because I grew up in an old farmhouse, and my mother always wanted to have a few farm animals, and the rest of us vetoed the idea, and I always swore I'd never live in another old house. Now, though, I totally understand where she was coming from. Sigh. I've turned into my mother after all.

Ahem. Back to your post. This seriously looks like such a fun, fun adventure! Simon looks scarily like Jeff, when they are together I'm sure strangers think they're brothers ALL THE TIME! Love that picture of Eti and Ethan in the living room by the Christmas tree. And Steve and the alpaca, naturally.

I'm a country girl so this post was especailly interesting.  I realized the stuff I take so for granted isn't so very normal to a lot of people.  We were in the city over the wkend to celebrate our anniversary and I always love it for a few days... but, always ready to come home to my country home.

Love that your sister and her family are living their dream.

Love all the pictures. We hope someday to have a small farm. My husband and I both grew up on farms. My kids saw the pictures of the alpacas as I was reading through your post. They were like what are those? They look weird. LOL So I may have to do a "A" for Alpaca lesson We are able to buy the milk in the glass jars through our local supermarket because they buy from a local dairy. The chocolate is the best. It is much more creamy then the other milk. We take the containers back to the store for deposit. I love the last picture of your sister reading to your son. Really captures a moment.
