Rebecca emailed me and asked me if I could travel to do a wedding, and then she told me where the wedding would be and  I said "Yes"..Yes I wanted to go and see my Great Aunt Audrey and take Grandma with me so she could spend some time with her sister.  Yes I wanted to see my wonderful friend Shanda who lives there, yes yes yes.  I am so glad for all of it..I will do separate post later on the incredible wedding and my time with Grandma, for right now I wanted to show a few pictures of my time with Shanda and all that I loved about being there:

  • When I arrived all the kids came spilling out of the house--most of the kids were barefoot when they gave me the tour of their property. They are "home grown" kids full of fresh country air, homemade foods and imagination.
  • When she made me ham soup, she stepped outside to snip chives from her front garden to sprinkle over my soup!
  • I laughed almost constantly.  I am so happy for her, for where she lives, she is truly living a dream, her life is so full and filled with joy.
  • I want to bring my kids the next time I visit.
  • We spent time out in her rocking chairs and when it was too cold, we would move over to the little table where the sun shines, and we would sip chai tea and talk about how if we ever become widows we will live together.
  • One time when we were playing Pictionary her daughter Grace had a rabbit on her lap and then Ethan brought in Parker the dog, and Seth (the baby) was crawling around and the cat was somewhere and Caleb was sneaking a chicken into the house.  She has six kids and one more on the way and it reminded me of the happy business of having that many siblings growing up.
  • I noticed the face drawn on the pillar of her front porch, I am trying to remember exactly what she said but it went something like this "Oh, I hope it doesn't fade--look how happy this face is, whoever drew this must have been feeling very happy!" I love her perspective on life!  She is like a pair of rose colored glasses, that I get to call friend.
  • She took me to her favorite spots down at the creek, the clearing by the dam, the woods, after all these years I was able to take in her views, and to get a feel for how she lives, in her home.  Home is so private to me, it was so so nice to meet this home.  I have known her since college, but the last time I was in her home, Jeff was a baby and it was a different house.  Isn't it true that you know more about a woman after you visit her in her kitchen and stay for a few days and see her life behind the scenes?
  • Since starting my own family I have struggled with finding a "new normal" I feel guilt where I feel I am lacking and not reaching the level of Godliness my parents had and also feel insecure in the areas where I am paving a new path and doing it different.  It is an  underlying feeling of "Am I doing this right?" and being with Shanda was wonderful because she sets a pattern to follow and gives encouragement just by her example.  I came home with courage to be the mom I already was, and to relax and enjoy it more!

"It is not merely by speaking to children about spiritual things that you win them over.

If that be all you do, it will accomplish nothing less than nothing.

It is the sentiments which they hear at home,

it is the maxims which rule your daily conduct

the  likings and dislikings which you express-

the whole regulation of the household, in dress,

and food, and furniture-the recreations you indulge

the company you keep-the style of your reading

the whole complexion of daily life

this creates the element  in which your children are either growing in grace, and preparing for an eternity of glory

or they are learning to live without God, and to die without hope."  (Quoting Rev. W. B. Mackenzie) Pg 78

I feel like I should just have this quote hanging in front of me all day so that it can be a constant reminder and conviction, especially for the influence of my kids but also as a reminder that I am still growing and who and what I surround myself with effects my outlook, my choices, my awareness of grace and the deep deep love of Jesus in our lives.  It is one of the reasons Shanda is precious to me.

* All quotes are taken from a very old  Book,  the pages all look tea stained and are falling away from the sewn binding so as I read it, it is more like a loose leaf than an actual bound book. It smells like the attic, and on the first page there is a small quote "Home, sweet home, there is no place like home." The title is "Home" by Rev. W. K. Tweedie

You rock!!
you always have the most fabulous resources to take your quotes from. as i was reading this one i found myself knodding along with alot of the sentiments expressed. how fabulous! i adore the photos and the stories of your time with Shanda and look forward to the entry about time spent with your grandma as well. you have such beautiful people in your life..its a joy to get little glimpses into your time with them. From what i've seen and read you are doing a great job being a parent and striving to be a Godly wife and mother. I'm not a mom nor a wife but i'm sure there are days where you wonder 'am i doing this right? God, am i being the right wife and mother? the way that YOU want me to do this?' i have no doubt that you and Steve are continually seeking hte Lord both in your marriage and your parenting of your dear ones. What a blessing to see another wonderful family at work and in life and just to see how love and family looks in another dear house. it sounds fantastic. i'd love to be able to just let life BE and not be so concerned about stuff. to have all those lovely kids and animals and joy...wow sounds like such a blessed place. thank you for sharing.

Shanda exudes "motherhood" in everything about her. :) I think she's an angel from heaven...and that's why she lives in a such a beautiful place...God was padding her landing from the skies with beautiful scenary and heavenly children to care for. :)

@SpazzyMommy -

I am linking my comment to spazzymommy because her description of Shanda is exactly what I also think of that dear mother of 7. <3 Shanda has made my life more sweet, beautiful, and eternally-minded. I am deeply grateful for her friendship, which I consider a rare treasure.

So fun, after we get done our conversation and you telling me what a time of blessing and refreshment it was to visit Shanda, I get on here and see a post about it! All friendships are beautiful, but friendships that have lasted for many years and weathered changes in life are so precious; they give something that nothing else can.

Like Fwren, I love that red pitcher, and I'm drooling over her porch. My home in heaven is going to have a huge porch like that where I can sit and chat with all my friends :)

(Oh, and thanks again for the conversation this morning--I feel hugely refreshed. And my house looks much better for all the chores I was able to get done while on the phone, too!)

All the pictures and quotes are great I am laughing with tears in my eyes!  Love it, Jo!  Oh, that dog picture.....I'm groaning over that one.....and laughing at the same time.  It's a perfect representative of my crazy but wonder-FULL life!  You were a DREAM visit for me and I LOVE that you got to come and stay for days like that (thank you Steve!!)....we could relax and just be together.  The pictures of me and my baby will always be a treasure to me.  I can't wait to show Rich this post!  He'll love it, too.

I'm sure it was Davy-do who drew that happy man face...

Thanks to the ladies who are saying such sweet things....((HUGS))

I said "O joy!" to myself when I saw the title of this post. I was hoping to hear about your visit from your side as well. How sweet your descriptions with the wonderful quotes and pictures. It is a blessing to see some pictures of Shanda in the midst of home,Seth, animals I think you two must have a very wonderful friendship. You are both so wise in the Lord. Love that last pic of you both!
I love your thoughts on being a wife, mothering, and loving God. Yes, keep striving upward, yet, also enjoy all God is doing in the midst of your family. I think Moms in general never think they are doing enough. We need to keep looking to God and doing well, yet also not beat ourselves up and miss the blessing of this time! You and Shanda both are blessed in your heritage of faith from your families, and as a mom of grown ones, I just know your parents are so blessed to see you walking in that faith and teaching your children!

Fun!! Fun!! Fun!! So very happy for the both of you. I completely agree about knowing much more about a woman when spending time with her in her kitchen and also the part about home being so private, what a neat thing friendship is :)

You are certainly blessed to have Shanda as your special friend.  I've just met her through blogging...she truly is a special person.  I've been so encouraged by her posts and the way she embraces being a  Godly wife and mother--something that is put on the back burner in this day and age.

What an answer to prayer this blog is for me today....This soothed my heart and fears of our family moving "out" a-ways...My youngest is almost 16 now, and our suburban home is buzzing with birthday party plans and a schedule for picking our older girls, 26 and 24 from the airport from D.C. a young women's retreat.... This mother is in an odd season these days....but a very happy one too. : )

Beautiful photography and words from the heart....I felt I was reading a beautiful photo book from the bookstore here. : )  I enjoyed it greatly!

Bless you, and bless your special friendship.  Very sweet....I love the kitchen saying...so true, so true...

This post was just what the Doctor (The GREAT Physician) order. VERY refreshing. I am a little sad though because almost all of your pictures will only 1/2 load for me, so I see just the top half of the pictures.

I have been meaning to ask. On Oct 13 Shanda posted some pictures from your visit, what lens are you using in the picture she took of you with your camera?

Just 2 days ago, I was telling my husband how Shanda had taken a stack of china plates and a picnic lunch and found a grassy place to share a simple, picnic lunch with a friend. And here you are, sharing *your* side of the story. It's so nice to see Shanda through your eyes! You and your camera did a great job of capturing a person's soul!

Thank you so much for all your nice words both on this site and on Shanda's.  Shanda and I have been calling one another and talking about what a blessing you all are to us...it is so fun that many of you know both of us through the blogs.  I am so pleased that you were encouraged by this post, I prayed that you would be!

@coolmomofeight - Here is a link to that lens, it is a good all purpose lens, if for some reason the link does not work it is the Nikon 17-55  http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/300490-USA/Nikon_2147_17_55mm_f_2_8G_ED_IF_AF_S.html  Hope this helps.

your description of Shanda and her home is exactly as I've imagined it to be~

it's funny and a bit "weird" when you feel like you know someone..
but don't really..
still, I think she's one that if I did ever meet in person -
I wouldn't be a bit surprised!

what a great quality in someone..
the person you portray is truly the person you are!

sweet post~ and though I don't "know" you quite as well..
I'd say ditto to the things I said about Shanda - -
after all.. birds of a feather.... :)

love to you both.

I can't help but to feel a slight twinge of envy at reading your descriptions here of your time with a wonderful lady like Shanda.  I've never had opportunity to meet her in person but she seems to be a very sweet spirit and I've learned much about contentment in just reading her heart on her blog.  Thank you for sharing your pictures and your thoughts here.
