Ocracoke

It was SUCH a good day!  I knew it was going to be good weather and that I should get the kids out of the house and walking but by the time the boys got off the bus I was NOT motivated.

I am so glad I went.

Here are all the reasons why:

One, all the leaves were full, full, full of color, and the light shining through was so pretty

Two, Eti asked if he could lead, because he said, and I quote, "I really want to get us lost".

Three, Jeff held my hand.

Four, the elderly man who lives two houses down, who I have been trying to "thaw", smiled and talked to us, and even brought his dog over and let us pet the dog today.  All this after five years of me smiling, waving, and saying hi and him ignoring us.  I know he is a widower and is "hibernating" since her death.  How wonderful this interaction today!

Five, Eti led us to the little country market a few blocks over.  I have been wanting to check it out since we moved here, inside I found...brace yourself, PENNY CANDY.  The elderly lady who has been running the store corrected me, it has gone up in price in the 45 years she has been there it is now 2 cents!  A row of candies behind her that the kids can look forward to picking out and have some of the memories I had growing up.

We had decided last year when I first booked the wedding in Norfolk to have our family vacation in the Outer Banks N.C. since it was only a few hours away.

We found a great house that was perfect for us, and this time around we invited my parents to come with us, we have never been on vacation with them before and really wanted the kids to have  memories with them like we do with Steve's parents.

On one of the first days there we took the ferry over to Ocracoke island.

002web

My favorite coffee shop on the island has a wall with magnets all over it and you can make up poems and quotes, above is the existential quote/poem that evolved after letting all the children add their own words.

003web

There is an old old house (now a museum) on the island where many of the things are preserved and you can walk through the rooms and see what it was like on the island many years ago.

Steve was reading my blog and when he got to these pictures I found him fake sleeping in the most dramatic fashion with his arms hanging down at his sides and his face on the key board and I think there was drool.  I guess country cottage pictures, just aren't his thing.

006web

This pattern is called the Ocracoke pattern, one of the inside stripes is always red.  It was most popular on the island during the 30's and the 40's.

008web

I love the colors, even the pot holder was cool, it reminded me of something you would find in Anthropology today!

I had to talk Steve out of buying these foam Wright Brothers' flight goggles!

I was squinting through the viewfinder trying to get a shot of this lighthouse when Steve decided to be funny..maybe he was paying me back for not buying him the glasses.

My Jeff, this is a sweet shot for me,  after I took it, we walked along and looked for shells together and he talked to me about all the adventures he has on the playground at school, during recess.

Hatteras lighthouse taken late that same night.  It is HUGE, the tallest brick lighthouse in the world.

Jeff took this shot of Steve and I, we are standing out on our little deck.

This weekend was a little get together with my family and it was at my brother Joel's house, he was showing me a collection of old books he has.  Among them I found the Bible my mom used when we were all little.  Joel would not part with it but I did copy out some of the notes she had written in the cover they inspired me thinking that they inspired her when she had six little ones running around.

"An excellent disciple of a singular master"

"We cannot change our hearts; that is the exclusive work of the holy spirit.  But we can and must avail ourselves of the means He uses."  -Jerry bridges.

Titus 1:1

"Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness"  Next to this she had written " My job description/my kids"

One more thing, something Steve's dad said last night, Spurgeon started his sermons with "O, Lord have mercy on me a sinner", so humbling and beautiful. I have thought about it all day.

That is one of my favorite vacations that I still tell people about--Ocracoke Island and Cape Hatteras. I Loved the lighthouses and wish I would have known I was looking at the World's largest brick lighthouse! I loved the people and the quaint little eateries!! Love the picture of you and Steve :)

OH MY. I wish I had known that you were going to be in NC. I seriously would have trekked the few hours over to see you. I really would have. I live in the Piedmont of NC.  :)

The lighthouse pic is INCREDIBLE. I love it. Wow. "Our State" magazine has an annual photo contest of pics taken in the state of NC....I think they'd LOVE seeing that picture.

I can't believe you said no to the foam goggles!!!! *LOL* I mean, really!!  :) (he-he) I hope you enjoyed NC. Tonight it's going to be 34 degrees. Brrr.

Steve always makes me laugh...or your descriptions do...a delightful combination. I can just imagine my hubby being enthusiastic over such glasses. We have had a few special items like that through the years that show up at the oddest times. Some black rimmed glasses with no lens were often featured.

The Eti on the pier, sunsets with your guys, the incredible lighthouse against the stars, old cottage stuff, your mom and Coco through the grasses...lots of great stuff. Looks like a memory filled vacation.

I think you should have let Steve get the goggles. They would have made quite the fashion statement! He'd start a new trend!

"Delight like a blue dream" sounds like it should be the title of a book. (Trust me to think of that!)

The pictures are all beautiful, but the one of the lighthouse at night against the stars: OH MY.

JO~
You take us on the best adventures! Did you collect a bit of sand?

You must remind your DH that you include photos such as the cottage shots for old ladies like me.
:)
That quilt! OY! I made one of those years ago when the girls were little...from bits of their dresses and mine...and didn't do sashing between the squares. I am realizing that I should have after seeing this one. My oldest granddaughter has it now. Well loved at this point...without sashing.
Imagine that!

My grandmother had a pump like that in her kitchen. No running water in her place. Actually...many of my friends who lived on farms had pumps in the kitchen. There was usually a big bucket on a chair with a dipper that everyone drank from. My "citi-fied" mother was aghast at such an arrangement. I thought it was fun!

Once again, JO...you present us with another lovely post. Always a pleasure.

Loved this post! The light House at nite is an amazing amazing pictue LOVE IT! What nice memories you made with your parents, I loved vacationing with mine this yr.... We too have an elderly neighbor a few houses down and she is a widower~ when I walk Naomi and Weston in the double stroller she is often sitting and reading on her porch any how, now I too am sometimes invited to sit with her and we talk and she has come to love the children. (she makes us cookies too and keeps them in the freezer for us when we come) I love talking with her because she has lived her life in this town and she tells me stories of what it was like 80yrs ago! When she walks which she hardly can anymore make it past the block she weights at the top of our driveway and I send Abbie out and they hold hands and walk as far as Birdie can and then Abbie walks her home it is the sweetest thing ever...I love teaching my children to have tender thoughtful hearts toward the elderly. ~Amanda

God absolutely does not leave the stay at home Mom alone, I see these quotes that you took from your own mom, and I talk to you and my other Christian friends, and all of us HAVE HIM in such an amazing real way.  It just really overwhelms me....He is working in the young mother's heart pulling us close to Him, giving us strength for the incredible task of mothering.  We really are blessed to be homemakers.  We have an opportunity for such a deep relationship with the Lord at this time, surrounded by the peaceful home environment.

I laughed out loud about Steve "falling sound sound asleep" over your pictures......what a man.....of course he woudn't like THOSE, but I sure do!  I love all the colors and you're right about the anthropology type things, I think that's why I like that store so much, it has turned the creative home crafts and sewing projects into something COOL.

The pictures of the ocean/lighthouse/amazing sky....all, so beautiful!  The stars in that one shot....look almost as bright and amazing as the real sky!  Very very nice.

Joanna, I've been baking in the kitchen this morning, with baby Sethie hanging off my pant legs.  LIFE IS GOOD.

Love ya~Shan

What a beautiful post.  A mixture of love of country, nature, motherhood, wifelyhood...  I loved the pics.  Husband walked by, unnoticed, and commented on your husband's goggles "cool goggles" ~ must be a male thing.  The falling asleep at the keyboard thing must also be a male thing - I totally envisioned my own hubby doing the same exact thing! And the pictures - especially the one of the lighthouse at night...ahhhh!  B.E.A.U.tiful.

Great post, and the scripture?  Speaking to my heart this morning!  Nice meeting you Joanna!

I love passion flowers. We used to have one but got tired of it climbing every which way and also of the monarch catapillers eating it all up, making it look awful for most of the summer. They have such beautiful flowers though! I really love all your beach front pictures! So pretty...and the lighthouse picture is phenominal! I'm guessing you used a really long shutter speed in order to get the stars big and bright?
If this entry has any errors I didn't catch, it's due to my cat climbing all over my keyboard while I'm typing ;)

The lighthouse pic at night took my breath away.  You know, I have to click on them to view them in a separate window (b/c of the dialup), and when it opened, I actually said, "Wow" outloud.  Makes me wanna say, "Eat that, Thomas Kinkade."

I love love love that picture of you and Steve.  I love seeing people love each other.

I wish you could see my yard right now--leaves everywhere, pretty trees, rain falling--hard, and the creek is swollen with brown, muddy water, flowing quickly down to the lake.  The sunroom is cold.  I've had three cups of coffee.  It's 10 am, and all of us are still in our jammies (except Dave, he's at work).  The kids have been QUIET all morning.  It's the perfect day.

Wish you were here.
