Vicariously

When my kids ask for a story from my childhood I usually hand them a story that includes me somewhere in a tree.   There were six kids in my family.  We grew up in the city and the four older ones would play elaborate games of tag/war with all the neighbor kids.  We would  run through the backyard of every home on the block.  We came up with codes and signs for our teams and then would hide out at our bases way up in trees.  It must have looked hilarious to onlookers, a whole block filled with kids in every tree busy doing signs like an air traffic controller.

I spent many hours sitting on a stone bench under a very old lilac bush in my family backyard, or high up in a tree hiding away on some branch with a good book.  Before Coco and Eti were born, I went to visit the old house and saw that they were going to cut down the lilac bush so I took some photographs of the lilacs in bloom and also took some small branches.  I glued the branches all around a frame and that is in Chloe's room now.

One time I was trying to show off to my three brothers and climbed the highest tree.  I climbed to the top and was promptly humbled in my ability to get back down.  I waited there all afternoon until my father came home to talk me down.

Last year I drove my kids over to that very tree and was pleased to find that the height was still impressive to my adult eyes.

We do not have any big trees on our property so you can imagine how happy I was to set Eti and Jeff loose on the tree in Nan's yard.

Jeff is wearing the blue, can you see Eti?

I LOVE this picture below, look at his bare feet!  God is so so good in the way that He lets me visit the happy memories of my childhood again through my kids.

How fun!  Your pictures are so cute. My boys love climbing trees too, and we only have one big maple in our front yard with branches too tall to reach!

I'm so SO happy that you encourage your kids to climb trees. That's seriously one of the best parts of my childhood... finding a secret place to sit and hang out, with a good friend or a good book. Gorgeous pictures, as always!

So fun indeed! I too have many memories hanging out and climbing trees, as well as watching my three boys up many a tree. My youngest is the biggest tree climber. I am thankful I was used to boys by the time he came along!

There is nothing like climbing a tree. Some of my fondness memories involve people in trees.

We all grew up climbing trees all summer long, too.  We loved to get as high as we could and to look how far we could see.  I'll have to dig through the family pictures at my mom's house and see if I can find any of us in the trees.  It would be a neat framed collage.

ANYWAY..back to your post....I love the look on Eti's face in the last one.  He is one happy boy!

Adorable ~ I love trees.  As a kid, I used to sit in a tree to read my book ~

Now I have to call the people that bought our childhood home and see if we can come by and let Bri climb my old tree!
As the oldest of 3 girls, I would escape to the huge crown pine in our back yard to read, draw and dream in.
Your tree is perfect for climbing and barefeet!

I also spent my childhood climbing trees..
My favorite was the neighbor's apple tree. It was a perfect place to perch and think. The ground below it was blanketed with violets.
I did not have lots of siblings to play with...(just one younger brother)...but so enjoyed my friends' large families. Perhaps that is one reason why I had five - trying to recapture those memories.

Nice post, JO.

I, too, was a tree climber! It was a great place to "get away" and pretend I was in a faraway, beautiful place! I hope my favorite tree is still there on Bristol Rd. in Warminster, Pennsylvania!  Love, GAil

tree's make some of the best playgrounds~ the kids worked all weekend on a tree house in the woods. they are so excited with the results and now there's talk of sleeping up there once the weather is warm enough... :)
