A gauge for greatness

019web

At walden's pond Thoreau had

a bed,

table,

desk,

wash bowl,

once cup,

one spoon,

and three chairs "One for solitude, two for friendship, three for society"  and only a few other things in his little cottage.

If I had that cottage one of those chairs would be for Shanda

We try to get together at least once a year, last year we went to an antique store. A wonderful disorganized place that made it almost believable that nothing had been touched for a few generations.

Did I already blog about the book that is called The Quilts of Gee's Bend?  Even if you don't like to quilt, the color combinations will just blow your mind.  It weighs as much as Coco but is just so delicious to look through. Anyway I thought of that book while seeing these ones in person.

Just a few images I took at the antique store

When you bring the purchases up to the counter the tags are taken off and placed on the pages of this large book.  The ones that are full are tied down with twine.  If they were selling this book I would take it, look at what is at the top of the page "A Gauge of greatness" .

Shanda and I have been mailing our Christmas presents to each other in January for years.  It is easier and gives us something to look forward to after the holidays are over.  Last year among other things, she sent me this book, and a bee hive, which cracked me up, Shanda understands that I would love that best!  Under that wrapping paper was a signed print by Tasha Tudor, the author/painter we have been fans of for ever and ever.

The book, Steve has said over and over is "So Joanna", the author is a Quaker who collected lists of other people's belongings.

In the book he wrote a small description of the character and then their list.  It is fascinating really, and full of some of my favorite people, Annie Dillard, Emma "Grandma" Gatewood (who hiked the Appalachian trail a few times after raising eleven children) Basho, William Least Heat Moon, Oh, and John Muir my Favorite Naturalist, here is his list:

Comb

Brush

Towel

Soap

Change of underclothing

Copy of Burn's poems

Milton's Paradise Lost

Wood's Botany

small New Testament

Journal

Map

A plant press

I stuck my father's packing list between the pages of the book.  When we hike on the Appalachian trail together he always packs about 70 pounds of survival gear and emails me his list in case I want to do the same.

I have a few inspiration books, I use them like some people use "Mood boards" where you can tack up everything that speaks to you.  Instead of hanging things up I glue/tape/staple/paper clip everything that catches my eye, inside of one of my books.  I have filled two large ones just on decoration ideas and am now on my third. I also have some idea books on photography and one that is just a mess and looks like what the inside of my head must look like, with thoughts going all over the place, everything goes into that one.

It is so true, to find out what your style is, cut out every image in a magazine that you like, if you can't cut it out write about it in the margins, once you have a big fat collection you can flip through it and see what the recurring themes are, what colors keep coming back.  It helps me discover my tastes but also inspires me when I feel unmotivated.

Shanda Keeps one as well and  let me borrow hers (she even let me write in it).  We mail each other quotes, photos, and notes on decorating and sewing and so I have little treasures from her in my inspiration book and she has things from me.  Below are a few images from her book that I took before mailing it back to her.

This year she gave me a Moleskine, I am never without one, they are the absolute perfect journal/notebooks.

She also gave me the above photo cards from hallmark, they reminded me of Moo cards.  They are the size of business cards and have quotes on the back like:

"How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives. -Annie Dillard

She also got me oven mitts from Anthropology which is MY store, and a book I have wanted for a while by Kelly Rae Roberts full of art techniques.

Joanna, this, I think, is my all time favorite blog! You and Shanda are SO cute together! You have portrayed your friendship and your personality and tastes so beautifully! I, too, love antiques and artsy places, especially Anthropologie. I do love your idea of putting all of that beauty in books! I had a built up stack of beautiful pictures from magazines and house plans that I either drew or clipped out of magazines; my "dreams". In a moment of discouragement and sheer frustration after realizing that we would be stuck in this dumpy little house for forever with no money to ever fix it up (or better yet, move to my dream house), I threw away my dream stack. I tell myself that the Lord has it. Anyway, the Gauge of Greatness book with all the tags, etc., is beautiful!!! And I love how you and Shanda are doing the book thing back and forth and the gift in January... this is all so great. You girls are wonderful and I hope God blesses you with more opportunities to get together! Keep on blogging and taking pictures! What a treat it is to look at what you've done! Love, Gail

what an awesome time you guys have together...being able to share in these moments of friendship and go on little adventures together, but also to read each other so well and know each other dearly that such lovely thoughtfilled gifts are able to be shared. i love the idea of an inspiration book. i have magazines upon magazines waiting to be gone through. but perhaps one day i'll have them all gathered together. that quilt is definately something i'd hover over and try to justify purchasing. its beautiful.

i'd love to read a list (short or long) of some of the books you've been reading lately. i always love the little excerpts you include and they always picque my interest. how do you go about finding them?

I wonder how many people feel that Anthropologie is "my" store?! I've always felt it was mine. If I could find bridesmaid dresses there then I would but no luck so far... Great entry, very fun.:)

Up this morning after a very restless night of getting up over and over....I said good bye to Rich, and brought my coffee in my room for journal and devos.  I wrote in my journal about how the moods of the last few weeks of pregnancy are sometimes so unpredictable..... I don't know myself these days, or how I will react to any given situation!  Needless to say, after signing on xanga and seeing this post the floodgates opened!  All very happy tears, though.  Thank you dear.  I wonder if you can imagine how much this meant to me?  To peek into your heart through this blog, and see myself there, just like you are in my own?

I love how you photographed all the gifts....laying out the cards like that looks SO beautiful!

The ones from the antique store are my favorite, though....that big fat book with the tags - so awesome!  We had so much fun in that place.

I love your site. I found your's through Shanda's site.  You all have the gift of "capturing the moment" and then sharing it with all of us.  The trip to the antique store looks like it was so refreshing.  I like the idea of posting pictures in a journal to get a feel for style. I have such a hard time thinking outside the box....you ladies inspire me!!  Thank you for letting me snoop and be inspired:).

The very title of that book ... "Journeys of Simplicity" ... is inspirational. It makes me want to tear through my house and clear out everything that isn't ABSOLUTELY necessary. Sunday I was watching skating, and one girl skated to "Simple Gifts" (Tis a gift to be simple, tis a gift to be free, tis a gift to come down where we ought to be ...) and I thought again, as I always have whenever I hear that song, how beautifully poignant the words are.

Friendships are so beautiful and special--yours and Shanda's is one to admire!

As a decorator, I often advise people to start clipping pictures and making notes of things that appeal to them. I hand them a stack of assorted magazines. When they finish I can find the direction we need to go, even if they are not aware that they liked strong contrast, etc. A pattern emerges and the true personality of the client becomes obvious and makes my job a breeze.

You are fortunate to have such a good true friend. As always, I enjoy your site.

This is such a cool post!  I love all the photo's.  I've started a book, also, where I've been keeping keepsakes of my tastes in styles and things that catch my eyes, things I find fun, pretty, breathtaking . . . I think your friendship is so amazing.  Keep it up!  Things for the inspiration in this post.  I just might sit down tonight and start gluing some more stuff into my book!

I had to come back and read this again!  LOL  I'm getting sooooo excited for our next visit.

I love all of your blog, the pictures are awesome and the things your kids say/do still make me chuckle, like that sign, "Everyone but Mom and Dad" from a few posts back.  Love ya!
