The date was wonderful, we went to NYC for the day. Here it is Tuesday and we are still smiling to ourselves over it!
On our list of things to do before we die: EAT AT KATZ'S DELI I don't know where we first heard about them, maybe the food channel but we both have been talking about it for a while now.
This Jewish deli has been open for 120 years. Being there in person during the lunch rush felt like what I imagine being in a mob of crazed fans at a U2 concert would be like. The picture above is a small portion of the cafe, the lines for the food was a mad house. Once you get your food you sit at any open seat and share a table with strangers, the couple we sat by were locals..most of the people in the room were locals, that says a lot about the food right there. The matzo ball soup was so much better than what I make. Every inch of wall space was covered in framed photographs of famous people who have eaten there, or with signs saying what movies were filmed there.
For most of the day the subway was crowded the c train was not running so the a train and e train were picking up the slack, but at one point when we were going towards Chelsea we found ourselves completely alone on the subway. Tee hee hee. So I sang very loudly the first song that popped into my head. Steve and I are quite apposites, he was all like "Joanna there are cameras in here!!"
One of our favorite walks was along the riverside, it was so bright and clean and open.
Photographs I did not take: - A man helping a woman, he did not know, carry her stroller up the long flight of steps. The kindness especially in NYC was beautiful.
- Four young boys playing the drums in the subway. The drums were strapped on them so they could dance and play their hearts out. They looked very young and I wondered if they were brothers. The drums were so loud I could feel it in my chest.
- Listening to all the different languages being spoken at the same time while I was waiting in a crowd, seeing the different faces and fascinating outfits. Aqua pants with yellow shoes. Pink skirt, bright red coat and avocado green boots.
- People carrying plants and flowers down the streets where there is no grass and very few trees.
- The homeless man with his coat stuffed with newspapers, the coat had holes in it and the shreds of newspapers were peeking out everywhere.
- Steve kissing me in port authority while crowds of people rushed past us.
One of the bands playing in the subway. She has purple tights on, a white tutu, and some kind of vintage helmet. The mike stand was wrapped in flowers and beside her was green wings that I am sure I would have seen her in if I stayed long enough. They had great voices and you could hear them long before you could see them.
At the end of the day we were walking through Times Square looking for a place to eat and we spotted a Turkish restaurant. We both have been craving this kind of food. I have been making some turkish recipes for Steve recently so we were both really excited to find this restaurant. Their Tabbouleh was MMM you know how when you are watching a cooking show they always close their eyes when they taste the food and say how good it is? That was us, with every bite. I asked the chef if I could take his picture because he had all the creases and lines that give a face great character. When we were leaving I spotted some TURKISH DELIGHT (from Narnia) and bought some for the boys. We went on a picnic after church on Sunday and I surprised them with it, Jeff knew what it was as soon as I lifted the lid. I did my best white witch impersonation for them. :)
